Dear Center Supporter,
The San Diego Archeological Center’s collections represent 10,000 years of history. The recent wildfires in our area have underscored the importance of the protection of our region’s history for current and future generations. The Center needs your help today in our efforts to “preserve pieces of the past.”
When you donate to the Center’s Annual Fund you help to support Center collections, educational programs, exhibitions, public programming, Center grounds and administrative costs. You can direct your gift to a specific area of giving interest.
The Center is the only active repository for archaeological collections in our region. Center collections represent a portion of the over 23,000 archaeological sites in San Diego County. The work that we do today will ensure that future generations can benefit from the research and curation of our region’s cultural heritage. Your pledge of support guarantees that the Center will remain a national model for the cultural, educational and scientific use of artifacts.
The Center is proud of it’s accomplishments to date. The Center continues the process of using new and innovative technologies to retrieve, locate and inspect collections in the Center’s new state-of-the-art compactable collections shelving units that have increased space dedicated to collections curation by more than 200%.
Through the efforts of highly qualified staff, 3,870 people visited the Center and over 1,128,000 people were served with off-site exhibits and programs in the past year. Over 3,395 children participated in educational programming and we are poised to expand the program with your help. As regional administrator of “Project Archaeology” the Center provides teacher training and direct instruction to school age children. Since 2003, over 125,000 students have received lessons in formal and informal settings.
Second Saturday Events including the Visiting Scholar Series introduced the public to a wide rage of archaeological-themed presentations by experts in the field. The Center continues its efforts to promote innovative technologies to provide access to Center collections. 50% of the Center’s collections have been linked to a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database - with 100% completion projected for 2008 and online access to the Center’s library is in process.
The Center is developing a county-wide reference collection of rocks from naturally occurring rock outcrops to create a baseline specimen collection that can be used by archaeologists and researchers to identify raw materials used by early man. A grant from the Anza-Borrego Foundation supported research of prehistoric pottery with national and international scholars. In the coming year, a National Science Foundation Grant will support research into early grinding technology of indigenous peoples through the creation of replicated tools. This research will provide a greater understanding of the social and economic significance of archaeological ground stone assemblages from hunter-gatherer societies.
In October, the Center hosted the first Excellence in Archaeology Awards to honor outstanding archaeological projects curated at the Center that represent Excellence in Education, Cultural Heritage and Scientific Research to promote and celebrate collaborative partners who have, and will continue to contribute to a standard of excellence at the Center.
Will you make a commitment today to contribute to the important work of the Center? A donation in any amount will support our mission to preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public.
Sincerely,
Cindy Stankowski, Director
