The Center
Receives Two Major Grant Awards

County Supervisor
Pam Slater Price,
Las Patronas

The Center is proud to announce it has received a $10,000 Community Projects Grant from San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price to fund a portion of an exhibit, education and recycling program.


The Center also received $7,100 from Las Patronas to fund capital purchases for the Center's Culture Classroom and Curatoral Vaults.

The San Diego Archaeological Center is a museum where visitors can learn the story of how people have lived in San Diego County for the past 10,000 years. In addition to its role as a museum, the Center serves as an education and research facility and is the only local organization dedicated to the collection, study, curation and exhibition of San Diego County's archaeological artifacts.

The Vision of the Center is to provide the general public and archaeology professionals with a museum, education and research facility where artifacts:

    • are used in educational programs and museum exhibits so the public can enjoy learning about the prehistory and history of the San Diego region through educational programs and museum quality exhibits.
    • will be cared for in a state-of-the-art environment.
    • are available for further academic and professional research.

Volunteers are always needed, and require no previous experience. Click here.

NEW! A limited number of Research Assistants are needed for the Center’s ongoing National Science Foundation experimental archaeology project “Understanding Hunter-Gatherer Grinding Technology Through Experimentation.”

and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.


The Center museum is open to the public,
with a suggested donation of
$2 per person or $5 per family.

Archaeology Without the Dirt - Volunteers Wanted!

Did you ever dream about becoming an archaeologist?
Do you enjoy history? Do you have office skills, or want to learn?
Make a Difference!
Volunteers are needed at the Center for many tasks, from docents to library work, GIS to collections intake and exhibit preparation.

Volunteers and interns are needed to do “archaeology without the dirt.” No previous archaeological experience or knowledge is necessary for this unique volunteer opportunity.

Archaeology:  the scientific study of material remains (as fossil relics, artifacts, and monuments) of past human life and activities.

Artifact: any portable object made, modified, or used by humans.

Curation:  the care, management, and use of archaeological collections. Care means to prevent deterioration, management means that collections are organized and accessible, and use means making collections available for scientific research, public education and cultural use.

 

    The San Diego Archaeological Center is a member of the San Diego Conservation Resources Network, or CRN, whose mission is to "support the network of resource conservancies involved in the preservation and stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the San Diego region and promote public understanding of conservation issues."  Read more

San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park     San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park honors the soldiers who fought in the battle between the U.S. and Californio forces on December 6, 1846 in the midst of the Mexican-American War.  Generals Stephen Kearny and Andres Pico both claimed victory.  Visitor Center with exhibits and programs, hiking trail, picnic area.   Saturday and Sunday only, 10:00am to 5:00pm. San Diego Wild Animal Park   Visit the San Diego Archaeological Center, then drive down the road just 1.5 miles to visit this world famous attraction.
